MEETING NOTES

Our First meeting of the new year was kicked off by First Husband Kent Stewart, while President Paula frolicked in the Florida sun and surf!!

Guest, Steve Black joined the meeting while his wife attended another in the book store. Come, ride with us, Steve!

Mileage—we will wait until the end of January to give everyone a chance to submit 2007 totals. At that point a Miles Master will be named!

Submit, by going to the club website:

Wilmingtonbicycleclub.org; go to the Mileage page; click on the webmasters address and submit! Or call him at 937-383-2766

GOBACA was discussed. Many questions arise. This annual event for many years, was conceived as a club ride, then opened to the public, with the thought to grow it into a bigger, club supporting event.

It has not “grown”, and would eventually be limited by several factors: campground space, and liability concerns to name a few.

It is time to, again, list the ride in the Ohio Bicycle Events calendar. To list, or not to list!!??

Since listing, we have signed up roughly two or three new riders each year. These riders are also given membership for the next year—they have historically never exercised their membership. Should we stop offering to outsiders?

Cost—need it be increased to better cover expenses? Campground fees have increased.

The route—while exceptionally scenic, it is a very difficult ride. Over half of the participants do not ride the full distance, both days.

The campground—is there another that might welcome us?

The date—would earlier be better with regard to weather?

Continue it as a two day event?

These and other questions will be discussed at the next meeting. If you have input, share it with Paula, or come to the meeting.

In addition to GOBACA, we discussed other rides we want to schedule this year. Those included our own, Sissy Sentury (George wants it renamed—Teresa loves the name!!);FORBT—the Ohio River area ride that gave George the chance to save a horse this past summer!

We also discussed our traditional, self-supported summer vacation ride plans. We have none yet.

In the past couple years we have toured Maryland and DC; the Erie northshore; and had great fun. One suggestion for this summer is to resume the Maryland ride—it was originally planned as a Chesapeake Bay ride, but we didn’t get that far! This year we could finish what we started, starting from the ocean and riding back to the DC area. More discussion needed. Any other suggestions??

Bar taping demo was postponed until next meeting.

Safety in May.

Are there any “demos” you would like scheduled?

Quick Tip: Flat tires are never good, but they are even worse on winter rides. Changing a tube is a dirty job when your wheels are mucked up by wet, gritty roads. Your fingers might start freezing soon after they're out of gloves. It gets worse when the tire and rim are a tight match, making it difficult to pry the tire over the sidewall and then put it back on. So in winter it's smart to use tires with a looser fit. There are many tire brands and models, and some will go on and off your rims much easier than others. Check at local shops for recommendations based on the rims you're riding.

Recent Scheduled Rides

Weather is taking a toll, but the Saturday before Christmas, the scheduled ride went off from Xenia Station at around 40 degrees and a few clouds. George, Kristine, Brent and John rode to Yellow Springs and lunched at Youngs Dairy. It was great—whenever you think it is too cold—you would be amazed how comfortable you are 30 minutes into the ride. It’s like a summer day!!

The first scheduled Saturday in January did not go as well, though the weather was as good. John backed out as leader.

Dress in layers and get out there!! We need to start the mileage count in January!!!

Mileage

The club is currently at 5932; last year we finished with 60851. We are not far behind; if you haven’t turned in, get it done soon. Go to the web site—the Mileage page has a link for you to submit.
