Wilmington Bicycle Club

MEETING NOTES            May 2008

Our meeting began at 7:00 at the usual meeting place, Books ‘n’ More. In addition to eleven members, we were pleased to include guest, Barbara Khalili. Barb is ready to roll. She may join us on a night trail ride to Youngs Dairy. See the schedule

May being bicycle safety month, Paula reminded us to wear helmets.

TOSRV—several members rode—Saturday was beautiful; Sunday was one of the worst! And worse still, a rider was killed; hit by a SUV while taking a short cut on a busy highway. No details about how or why. This was the only ever vehicle fatality during TOSRV.

Charlie McIntire rode 100 miles in the previous weekends, Calvins Challenge; came back to ride 100 on Saturday in TOSRV. Charlie rides!

Speaking of Calvins…...Charlie rode 100 miles ……..in wind and rain…..an account on the website after the event said, half thru the first loop, they thought, “how much worse could it get?”

The “worse” that came, was even higher wind, accompanied by rain. Not the pansy rain that dual Doppler and forecast models had predicted before. Rather, this was the kind of rain you wait to blow over before you run to get in your car. To liken the experience on a bike to the layperson, imagine towing a wagon full of bowling balls through a 20 mile long car wash…..that was how much this sucked. The rain, driven at times by high gust of wind stung as it impacted face and skin.

And Charlie (and others) came back the next weekend for TOSRV!

The Fitness Fair was again held May 17, 11:00 at Denver Williams Park in Wilmington. This is the second year for this; we showed and we rode. Kent led a group of six other clubbies on a beautiful, windy, and a little hilly ride. Lunch at Generations made a great day even better. Thanks to Matt Johnson for providing a laptop for our “booth”.

RAAM, the Toughest Ride in the World

Kent Stewart will e-mail the dates riders are expected in the area. Volunteers are still needed as they pass thru. Contact Kent.

Reminder, Kyle, Kevin, Kent Stewart, and Jack Cook will be participating as members of thre support group.

Also, I forwarded e-mails with attachment that describe what and where help is needed for RAMM timer stations.

Racers will be passing thru Blanchester June 14-15-16-17-18. This is quite an event for cyclists—imagine—racing across America!!! And the longest you are allowed is 12 days!!! Look again at the schedules—see if you can help for even a short time!

Another interesting sounding ride was “a weekend in the hills around Bainbridge, Hillsboro on June 28. …….. stay in the Lazy H Cabins at Paint Creek Lake. A 79 mile loop to the south on Saturday and a 64 mile loop to the north on Sunday” There was also an e-mail with details.
