MEETING NOTES
Paula got us
started on time.
Did you order a GOBACA
T last year and not claim it?? Call Paula.
How about a WBC
polo shirt?? Paula is taking orders. Those of us at the meeting have placed
our orders. Call Paula.
The Wellness
Fair was Oct 22. Paula and George worked it—a Technicolor company event
that might be an opportunity to find new cyclists.
Summer Adventure
The Stewarts have
a summer plan. Riding across America!! Paula’s dad will accompany them in a
motor home. You likely know, Kent and Kevin and Kyle were on the support crew
for the Team Type 1 in the RACE Across America! So, they know the route. Piece
of cake.
The Hilly Hundred
Several of us
rode the Hilly—or some of it—or strolled it!
George, Donna,
Teresa, John, Bonnie, Jim Miley, Pam and Russ…. all—went to Indiana. Jim, Pam
and Russ rode the WHOLE thing! The rest of us …. had other things to do on
Sunday. And John did a lot of walking on Saturday. (Sunday included a 20%
grade… enough to make John take a hike!)
But it was a
great weekend. Fall colors; brisk weather (colder‘n’heck Saturday night! 35
degrees??). Lotsa emergency vehicles—none of us, fortunately. The Saturday
lunch—unlimited, scrumptious, fried chicken…...the ultimate biking food!
John vows to lose
30 pounds for his return match. (and is having his ride re-geared!).
Think About this…..Bike the Boros
Ride the 5 boros
of New York City on May 3. Along with 30,000 other riders! Think about it. Look
it up. www.bikenewyork.org
42 miles. 30,000
riders. Registration usually closes by April 1. It is roughly a 10 hour drive.
Jersey City or Liberty, NJ might be good (cheaper) places to stay. There is a
view of the Statue of Liberty across the bay, and a bike path along the Hudson.
New York is 5 minutes by water taxi or train. There is a RV campground and
marina. Hotels range from $109 up. There is a beautiful state park,
Cheesequake, 40 miles away.
Any interest???
Christmas Party
Will again be at
the Bush residence early in December, exact date to be determined soon.
Your 2009 dues
may be paid then. Checks for $12 per address should be made out to Teresa
Gallinis.
Goal Keeper
As the cycling season winds down here in the northern hemisphere, it's time to
set goals for 2009.
"Ride more" doesn't cut it.
For a goal to be effective, it must be specific. "Ride more than Big Ring
Bob" is better. But a goal also has to be measurable: "Ride more than
Big Ring Bob and make him cry like a baby."
It's also smart
to establish different levels of goals. You need stretch goals and lifetime
goals, such as, "Ride more than Big Ring Bob, make him cry like a baby and
ultimately crush his manhood."
Need help
creating your own goals? Read on.
Goal: Learn to change a flat.
Stretch goal: Learn to change a flat in less than an hour, for cryin'
out loud.
Lifetime goal: Never change a flat
because you're so inept that someone can't stand the delay and does it for you.
Goal: Ride to work one day per
week.
Stretch goal: Ride to work everyday.
Lifetime goal: Ride right past work
because you're retired.
Goal: Complete a century.
Stretch goal: Complete a century in less than 6 hours.
Lifetime goal: Burn more calories than you eat at the rest stops.
Goal: Keep bike clean.
Stretch goal: Keep bike clean enough to eat off.
Lifetime goal: Buy new bike whenever old one gets dirty.
Ride Schedule
To volunteer to
lead a ride, contact John @ jvanvelzor@who.rr.com
Note: most rides range from
25-45 miles, with some country roads and hills. A food stop at a local
restaurant is customary. Ride speed usually averages 13-14 mph, but there are
faster And slower riders. Faster or slower riders are encouraged to ride at
their speed – we regroup at turns, or the food stop for sure! We rarely lose
anyone, and most can find others of about the same capability.
Call the ride
leader before the ride to confirm it is still on – and to assure the leader
someone is planning to show.
Weather is not
always a deterrent.
